Po váhaní medzi vstupom do kláštora a vstupom do námornej pechoty sa v sedemnástich rokoch rozhodol pre druhú možnosť. Po troch rokoch, štyroch podvrtnutiach členku a vážnej hernie disku ukončil službu v námornej pechote a študoval anglickú literatúru s úmyslom stať sa učiteľom. Učitelia majú radi ľudí, najmä deti, a on si uvedomil, že jeho láskou je samotné písanie, nie jeho vyučovanie.
