The largest mid-career survey of celebrated American artist Nicole Eisenman, this exhibition features over 120 works showcasing her artistic evolution from the 1990s to the present across painting, printmaking, and drawing. Over two decades, Eisenman has crafted a versatile vision that merges high and low culture with exceptional skill. By blending traditional art-making techniques and a variety of historical influences—including impressionism, German expressionism, and social realism—she explores contemporary themes such as bar scenes, motherhood, and the artist's struggle. Central to her work are explorations of community, identity, and sexuality. Eisenman’s portrayal of women, encompassing both "butch" and "femme" identities, infuses her figurative painting with a bold queer perspective while reframing art history through a feminist lens. Her humor and incisive sociopolitical critique reveal the complexities of the human experience, addressing both the mundane and the absurd. This playful yet visually striking approach highlights the richness of her subjects and invites viewers to engage with her thought-provoking narratives. The exhibition took place at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, USA, from January 24 to April 13, 2014.
