The “Handbook of the Minorities of Armenia” presents the findings of a project funded by the German VolkswagenStiftung from 2012 to 2016, focusing on a comprehensive sociocultural and sociolinguistic survey of minorities in Armenia. Despite Armenia's generally homogenous ethnic composition, ethnic minorities represent significant cultural and linguistic diversity, often influenced by Armenian traditions. These minorities have received limited attention in discussions of ethnic patterns in the country. The Handbook addresses this gap through an interdisciplinary approach that connects cultural studies, sociology, and linguistics. It examines the eleven officially recognized minorities (Assyrians, Belorussian, Georgians, Germans, Greeks, Jews, Kurds, Poles, Russians, Ukrainians, Yezidis) and includes data on emerging ‘para-minoritarian’ groups (Udis, Armenian Tats, Syrian Armenians, Persians) resulting from recent political events. It also addresses remnants of the former Azeri population. The focus is on documenting ethnic patterns through aspects like self-perception, cultural practices, and socio-economic characteristics. The research, conducted by project members, is compiled by Ilona Schulze and Wolfgang Schulze from the University of Munich, offering an in-depth analysis of fieldwork data and secondary sources.
