This book proposes a comprehensive approach to designing business process management (BPM) systems that extends beyond mere process modeling. Utilizing a refined variant of Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN), the authors address critical issues overlooked in the BPMN 2.0 standard, emphasizing modality and actor/user interaction modeling while introducing an improved communication concept. To ensure executable models, the semantics of the modeling language are rigorously defined to avoid varied interpretations across tools, employing the Abstract State Machine (ASM) method for clarity. The authors illustrate how the model components integrate through a simple example process and introduce the enhanced Process Platform (eP2) architecture, which cohesively connects these elements. This method, named Hagenberg Business Process Modelling (H-BPM), is inspired by experiences from industrial projects where business analysts and software developers faced challenges with redundancies and inconsistencies in system documentation due to a lack of integration. The book targets researchers in business process management and industry 4.0, as well as advanced professionals in these fields.
