Focusing on non-critical strings, this thesis offers a groundbreaking technique for calculating the finite volume spectrum of confining flux tubes, enhancing the study of quantum gravity and QCD. By addressing the limitations of conventional perturbative expansions, it enables accurate energy level calculations for shorter flux tubes, facilitating a quantitative comparison with lattice data. This advancement reveals strong evidence for a novel pseudoscalar particle, the worldsheet axion, and opens new avenues for understanding quark confinement dynamics.
