Foucault's departure from Marxism leads to a distinctive form of materialism with significant implications for understanding social and educational discourses. This analysis aims to clarify misconceptions, particularly those stemming from linguistic interpretations that confine his work within the linguistic turn in French philosophy. Instead, Foucault is portrayed as a complex thinker, embodying elements of historicism, nominalism, materialism, and empiricism, as suggested by Habermas. This reevaluation seeks to deepen the understanding of Foucault's contributions to social theory.
