Set against the backdrop of the Smoky Mountains in 1910, the story reinterprets the Phaedra myth through the life of Thadius Steed, a moonshiner whose past is marked by loss. After marrying young Fate O'Dare, Thadius is pursued by Federal Agents, prompting him to leave and ask his brother Hyram to protect Fate. As Fate awaits Thadius's return, she unexpectedly falls in love with Hyram, leading to a tragic confrontation when Thadius comes back home, igniting a series of dramatic events.
