Hidden Challenges to Education Systems in Transition Economies

The education systems in Europe and Central Asia, once lauded for high literacy and completion rates, now struggle to adapt to market economies and democratic governance. This study identifies a disconnect between existing teaching methods and the skills needed in modern economies, such as problem-solving and flexible knowledge application. It proposes strategies for reform, including aligning education with market demands, enhancing fairness to combat poverty, improving resource efficiency, and reinventing governance. The World Bank's role in these initiatives is also discussed.
