Not just a mirror

Viac o knihe

Whom to represent, in which way, and with what right? The crisis of representation in democracy has deeply affected the theatre's role as a political art form, leaving it grappling with its societal connections. Often, it finds itself either confined to content-driven representation or overly reliant on aesthetics' transformative power. This work charts a global movement of artists striving for a contemporary political theatre that actively engages with society in both content and form. It aims to create a community where social and political actions can unfold, reflecting the diverse realities of society. Comprising eight essays, two interviews, and 15 case studies, it examines the performing arts as a political laboratory, revealing their potential to instigate societal change rather than merely masking its dysfunctions. Contributions from various artists and theorists explore the essential agnosticism of theatre, dance, and performance, emphasizing their role in challenging the status quo. This publication delves into fundamental questions of contemporary political theatre, showcasing artistic and political strategies from creators worldwide, including notable figures and collectives.
