Covid-19, climate change, populism, digitalization, and the Ukraine war have made the possibility and impossibility of reconciliation a pressing issue today. This volume explores the significant social importance of reconciliation from an interdisciplinary perspective. It examines varying understandings of reconciliation, reconciliation processes, and their limits through case studies. Key questions include: What conceptual equivalents exist in other cultures and religions beyond the Western notion of reconciliation? How, when, and why is reconciliation achieved in different cultures following events like ceasefires or public commitments to peace? What advantages does reconciliation offer over a peace agreement? Is lasting reconciliation attainable at the conclusion of conflict transformation processes? The contributions engage with these inquiries, set against the backdrop of the tension between reconciliation and irreconcilability, while drawing insights from theology, philosophy, law, social sciences, history, and art history. Through this exploration, the book aims to deepen the understanding of reconciliation's role in addressing contemporary global challenges.
