This open access book presents cutting-edge research on aviation noise and its associated annoyance, primarily highlighting the achievements of the ANIMA project (Aviation Noise Impact Management through Novel Approaches). It addresses a range of topics, including regulatory issues, the ICAO balanced approach, advancements in noise reduction technologies, potential impacts of future civil supersonic aircraft, and land-use planning concerns. Central to the ANIMA project are the effects of aviation noise on human beings, encompassing annoyance, quality of life, and health. Unlike traditional research that focuses solely on reducing noise at the source, this book emphasizes mitigating annoyance through understanding non-acoustic factors. It aims to assist communities near airports, airport managers, policy-makers, local authorities, and researchers in addressing aviation noise comprehensively. The book concludes with recommendations for EU, national, and local policy-makers, as well as airport and aviation authorities. These suggestions aim to identify research gaps and encourage actionable steps for political and regulatory bodies, fostering a more informed approach to managing aviation noise impacts.
