A giant wave of ice and debris surged toward us as I clutched my axe and hammer, bracing for impact. Ten strong men pulled at my legs while an angry crowd shouted in my ears. The rope slackened, and I lost my grip. Suddenly, I was in freefall, tumbling through a storm of meteorites. An incredible silence followed, and then I realized Ken was gone. This harrowing experience captures the shock and despair I felt after the avalanche swept me and my three companions off the mountainside, resulting in one fatality and leaving Peter injured and his friends in shock. This attempt on Ama Dablam marked the climax of my year in Nepal, which began with working alongside my father, Sir Edmund, and a Himalayan Trust team on bridge and school hostel construction. I also attempted to climb the unclimbed Kusum Kang and enjoyed a monsoon adventure with my Canadian girlfriend, Nena, in southern India. My story is filled with zest, humor, romance, and excitement, showcasing my adventures through the eyes of an enthusiastic young man.
