An apocryphal tale about an American medium whose spiritual career is thanks to a nosy photographer's photograph. After consuming a bad clam, Phoebe Hicks is photographed through her bedroom window. What emerges from her mouth is recognized as the first photographic record of ectoplasm. Phoebe unexpectedly becomes a pioneer of mediumship, establishing the standards for spiritual séances. During subsequent séances held in her home in Providence, historical figures such as Ivan the Terrible, Catherine the Great, Rasputin, the female pharaoh Hatshepsut, Elizabeth Báthory, Pushkin, the debunker of fraudulent mediums Harry Houdini, and the murdered Incan princess Umina materialize before an ever-growing audience of curious spectators. Thus, spiritualism captivates the minds of the inhabitants of Europe and America for decades.
