This work has an extensive introduction which discusses the development and variety of the avadana genre and introduces literary analysis as a distinctive and valid approach to the study of Buddhist texts, one which holds the potential for deepening our understanding not only of the avadanas, but also of the many condition texts, both mainstream and Mahayana, in which narative plays as essential role.
