A young Indigenous woman enters a colonizer-run dragon academy after bonding with a hatchling, setting the stage for a captivating new fantasy series. On the remote island of Masquapaug, fifteen-year-old Anequs discovers a dragon's egg and forms a bond with its hatchling, delighting her people who remember the days when dragons roamed freely, helping them thrive. However, the Anglish conquerors of her land have a different perspective on dragon-rearing and who should be involved. Reluctantly, they allow Anequs to enroll in an Anglish dragon school on the mainland, where failure means her dragon's destruction. Faced with challenges stemming from her lack of formal education, non-Anglish upbringing, and differing historical views, Anequs must navigate a new world both socially and academically. Despite these obstacles, she is determined to learn what she needs to support her dragon, even if it means self-education. However, she refuses to conform to the meek expectations of Anglish society. Instead, Anequs and her dragon are poised to challenge the status quo and embrace their power in a world that demands change.
