George Oppen (1908-1984) was a key figure among the Objectivists, co-founding the Objectivist Press in 1933. His political views shifted towards Marxism due to the Great Depression and fascism, leading him to abandon poetry for over thirty years. After serving in WWII, he returned to poetry, publishing 'The Materials' in 1962.
