In the year 1001, Thorgils Leiffson, son of Leif the Lucky, arrives in Greenland to be raised by Gudrid after being virtually orphaned. Driven by adventure and the spirit of his god, Odinn, Thorgils faces numerous perilous situations, including near-death experiences from execution, battle, disease, and shipwreck. Fast forward to 1019 in London, where Thorgils finds himself embroiled in a tumultuous love affair with Aelfgifu, the wife of Knut the Great, a powerful ruler in the Viking empire. Their passionate relationship unfolds with unpredictable consequences. By 1035, Thorgils has joined the Varangian lifeguard in Constantinople, witnessing the splendor of the wealthiest city while also encountering the deadly intrigues of the imperial family. Under warrior chief Harald Sigurdsson, he becomes an unwitting pawn in a treacherous scheme aimed at eliminating Arab pirates threatening Byzantine shipping lanes in the Mediterranean.
