The year is 1901. Hattie Clark is a widow with gumption, living alone in her homestead at the bottom of the Salmon River Canyon in rural Idaho--until Toby, a runaway eight-year-old boy, comes into her life and changes everything. Toby has come in search of his grand uncle, Afton McCabe, the gruff goldminer who is Hattie's closest neighbor.
