Mary, with her striking copper red hair and curious nature, struggles to fit into her Amish community in western New York. While her peers engage in hymn singings and games, she finds them unexciting and feels increasingly isolated. As the years pass, her sense of being a misfit deepens. However, a visit from her aunt presents a turning point; she invites Mary to help run her bakery in Lancaster, offering the chance for the change and fulfillment Mary yearns for.
