Petrified Forest National Park is a colorful land set in the arid country of northeastern Arizona. Spread beneath turquoise skies, the clay, sand and rock are aglow with shades of red and gold, barely hidden by the sparse cover of grass and spiny shrubs. For thousands of years, it has been home to various groups of people--some hunters, some farmers, but all tied to the vagaries of this harsh land. Petrified Forest National Park, located in northeastern Arizona, was established in 1962 to protect multicolored stone trees, Indian petroglyphs, and portions of the Painted Desert.
