Sisto Santo, a skilled mechanic turned taxi driver, picks up a fare at the Bellano train station, a woman who asks to be taken to the cemetery. But when they arrive, Sisto finds his passenger dead in the back seat. The police find no identification and no clue as to the woman's identity. This begins the unpredictable story of this novel, set in a town that reflects a past world but still remains current in its own way, a place where characters come looking to make peace with the secrets and hopes of their own lives, in ways that are sometimes whimsical or harebrained.
