Once in nearly every generation a dark-haired male was born into the traditionally fair-haired family of Pendleton. Through history, each of them had been known as Black Charles, men who would never marry, whose characters were arrogant and fierce. It was the fate of young Audrey Lawrence, herself used to fighting battles since the premature deaths of her parents, to cross swords with the latest Black Charles of this ancient family.
