This is an analysis of receptor-mediated cell phenomena and their relationship to cell function, emphasizing mathematical models and quantitative experiments. Written at the interface between cell biology and engineering, and seeking both to explain engineering approaches to cell biologists and to introduce a range of biological problems to engineers, this work makes a major contribution to the emerging field of bioengineering.
