The use of neurotoxins as tools to study neurodegenerative disorders is explored by both basic and clinical scientists in this text. The emphasis is on whether or not exogenous or endogenous neurotoxins may be part of the natural etiology of neurodegenerative disorders. An in-depth analysis of the potential mechanism of action of various neurotoxins, including MPTP, methamphetamine, kainic acid and several other excitotoxins, and the cholinergic neurotoxin AF-64A, is featured.
