Snaking through the heart of Africa is the Zaire River. From its beginnings as converging mountain streams, the Zaire reaches across the continent, twice crossing the Equator before spilling into the Atlantic Ocean 2,900 miles later. THE LAPSLEY SAGA tells the story of Samuel N. Lapsley and the crews of two paddle wheelers named for him, who, like this powerful river, forever influenced the lives of those in central Africa.In 1891 Samuel N. Lapsley journeyed up the Zaire River and its main tributary, the Kasai, to establish the Luebo mission station and the American Presbyterian Congo Mission. Lapsley died of blackwater fever two years later, but in those two years Lapsley's devotion to his work and faith in God branded his name on the African landscape.
