From the 11th century to the end of the 12th, Durham was home of the wealthy and influential church of St Cuthbert, a fortified peninsula in the confrontation between English and Scots, the site of one of the most spectacular Romanesque cathedrals in Europe, and a centre producing texts and manuscripts which had a wide influence in northern England. This study of Anglo-Norman Durham's history, architecture, art, and religious and literary culture the Cathedral Priory, its relationship to monastic reform and the eremitical movement, the attitude of its monks, and its books and writings; the prince bishops of Durham, including the careers of William of St Calais and Ranulf Flambard and studies of Durham's spectacular castle; the relationship between Durham and the Scottish kings, including the role of Malcolm III at the dedication of the cathedral; the architecture of the cathedral; and Durham manuscripts and texts.
