Mies van der Rohe at Work

Viac o knihe

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) is a pivotal figure in twentieth-century architecture. This book serves as a comprehensive document of his architectural philosophy, work methods, and teaching approach. The paperback reprint of a classic from 1974 includes enhanced photography and a new foreword by Phyllis Lambert, Founding Director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Peter Carter, who studied and worked with Mies, initiated the book while at his firm. It analyzes Mies' structural and spatial concepts through three building types: the skeleton-frame building in both high- and low-rise forms, and the clear-span building. The book delves into 28 of his most significant projects within the urban context. Additionally, Mies' contributions to architectural education are highlighted, particularly during his tenure as Director of the Bauhaus and later at the Illinois Institute of Technology. An entire section is dedicated to Mies as an educator, featuring examples from his students at IIT. The final section chronicles his journey from the son of a stonemason to a master architect of steel and glass, incorporating statements from Mies and his colleagues. This definitive monograph captures the essence of Mies van der Rohe's life and work with depth and sensitivity.
