Sixteen papers, forming a Festschrift for Franz Hampl, examine the development of historical writing, focusing in particular on the presentation of universal themes in the historical texts of different ancient cultures, Greek and Roman historians and 20th-century historical theory. Subjects include the depiction of suicide in Mayan artworks, theories surrounding the origin of the Etruscans, Herodotus and Egypt and the development of `Provincial Roman history', especially in Germany.
