Cardiovascular diseases represent the most important cause of death in developed and in developing countries. Among all cardiovascular illnesses, heart failure consumes the largest amount of health care associated costs. Although the introduction of novel therapeutic avenues has improved the patients' prognosis significantly, the overall morbidity and mortality remain unacceptably high. This book is focused on patients with anaemia accompanying chronic heart failure. It is the first comprehensive description of all aspects of this disease, starting with its prevalence and incidence. It describes the pathophysiology of anaemia including the diagnostic value of the available laboratory parameters and discusses the treatments of anaemia such as blood transfusions, oral and intravenous iron supplementation, and erythropoietin substitution.
