Keita Ali is on the run from Zantoroland, a mountainous island known for producing elite marathoners. He joins notorious agent Anton Hamm for a chance to run the Boston Marathon, hoping for a big payday. However, when he fails to finish in the top ranks, he hides in Freedom State, a wealthy nation intent on deporting refugees from AfricTown. To survive, Keita must stay mobile, evading Hamm and officials who threaten to send him back to a country where he faces death. In this underground world, where tens of thousands of "illegal" individuals live off the radar, Keita occasionally surfaces to compete in local races for cash. He navigates relationships with various characters: John Falconer, a student making a documentary about AfricTown; Ivernia Beech, an elderly woman facing assisted living; Rocco Stanton, the Immigration Minister and a recreational marathoner; Lula DiStefano, the self-proclaimed Queen of AfricTown; and Viola Hill, a black reporter investigating corruption between Freedom State and Zantoroland's officials. Keita's existence is illegal, and as he trains in secret, the stakes rise. He runs not only for his life but also for his sister’s, in a fast-paced narrative that explores the struggles of an undocumented refugee in a hostile nation.
