In 1940, Robert Bosch opened the first hospital named after him, embodying his principles of patient well-being through thoughtful care and aesthetically pleasing, practical buildings. His commitment to public welfare paralleled his successful industrial career. Since 1964, 92% of Robert Bosch GmbH has been owned by the Robert Bosch Foundation, which supports education, science, international understanding, and healthcare. This foundation enabled the establishment of a new hospital complex in Auerbachstrasse, Stuttgart, in 1973. The complex has seen continuous enhancements by Arcass Freie Architekten, including a geriatric rehabilitation clinic and a chapel designed by Günter Leonhardt, along with an entrance building by Joachim Schürmann & Partner, which offers a unique ambiance for a hospital. The access route features framed pools and pavilions, leading to a vertical 'spina' with a glass lift and staircase tower that culminates in a viewing terrace. Nearby, a housing estate designed by Schürmann & Partner provides varied dwellings for hospital staff. The hospital prioritizes patient and staff well-being through carefully curated fine art, selected by a dedicated committee. Manfred Sack, a long-time architecture critic, and Peter Walser, an architect and designer, contribute to the narrative of this remarkable institution.
