In 1942, Malta is besieged by the German air force, and Rocco Raven, a Brooklyn native and apprentice radioman, finds himself amidst the chaos. His only connection is with Fingerley, an enigmatic American secret serviceman whose true motives remain unclear. Isolated and disoriented after his lodging—a brothel—gets destroyed, Rocco wanders the ravaged streets of Valetta until he encounters Melita, the Jukebox Queen of Malta. She delivers jukeboxes made from salvaged car and gramophone parts to local bars, serving the beleaguered civilian and military populations. Their relationship blossoms amidst the island's decline, marked by passion and caution. As starvation looms and war's eccentricities surround him, Rocco initially stands as a voice of reason. However, the madness of his environment soon begins to affect him, drawing him into the perilous thrill of danger. This narrative weaves a tale of intrigue and desire set against a backdrop of surrealism, where the tension between reality and illusion reflects the uneasy coexistence of Allied forces and Maltese natives, all while the island's beauty is overshadowed by an air of mystery and despair.
