Studies in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism: The Buddha's Single Intention

This book presents an influential teaching of the Kagyü tradition of Tibetan Buddhism known as the <i>Single Intention</i>, authored by Drigung Jikten Sumgön (1143–1217), along with key commentaries, notably the <i>Light of the Sun</i> by Rikzin Chökyi Drakpa (1595–1659). The teachings of Jikten Sumgön were distilled into 150 core philosophical formulations called vajra statements, which form the essence of the <i>Single Intention (dgongs gcig)</i>. These concise statements articulate the Buddha's thought and the nature of the “ineffable” (<i>brjod du med pa</i>). The text emphasizes that ineffable mahamudra is central to all vajra statements, linking them cohesively. Additionally, it interweaves mahamudra throughout Buddhism, highlighting its relevance in disciplined conduct, meditative concentration, and discriminative knowledge; ground, path, and result; view, practice, and conduct; and the three vows of pratimoksa, bodhisattvas, and mantra. Jikten Sumgön illustrates how the fundamental values and insights revealed by the Buddha are woven into reality, making them accessible to all.
