Superintendent Mike Yeadings' sergeant, Rosemary Zyczynski, known as "Z," feels an unsettling intuition about her landlady's celebration dinner. Yeadings is set to promote either Rosemary or Beaumont, his other sergeant, to inspector, and the rivalry between the two detectives complicates their work. Their professional tension escalates when a brutal murder occurs: the body of a tenant, a woman who had recently moved in with her mother, is discovered. This case falls under Yeadings' jurisdiction, involving both Rosemary and Beaumont.
