Darknesses, the sequel to Legacies, continues L. E. Modesitt, Jr.'s fantasy saga, the Corean Chronicles. Set in the world of Corus, inhabited by humans, strange animals, and supernatural beings, the story revolves around magical powers wielded by the Talented. Alucius, the protagonist, has evolved from a gifted child on a remote Nightsheep ranch to a skilled soldier who escaped military enslavement in Madrien. Now a captain in the Militia, he faces new military and magical challenges. Corus remains fragmented after the fall of its ancient magic-driven civilization, and a would-be conqueror has resurrected legendary sorcerous creatures to aid his quest for domination. The Iron Valleys must ally with the Lord-Protector of Lanachrona, and the Twenty-first Company is sent to confront the invaders. Unbeknownst to his superiors and subordinates, Alucius's Talent is crucial for their survival. In this volume, he delves deeper into his magical abilities, encounters more supernatural entities, and uncovers the dark forces maneuvering for power throughout Corus. While many questions from the first book are answered, the journey in the Corean Chronicles continues.
