This book synthesizes known depositional environments and their resulting facies patterns in limestone and dolomite strata. The author, an internationally known expert, shows how stratigraphic and petrographic study may be used to interpret ancient realms of sedimentation and paleoecology. The interpretations are made by means of organic content, sedimentary texture, sedimentary and organic structures, and detailed stratigraphic relations. Three introductory chapters on carbonate sedimentation, stratigraphic principles, and petrography are followed by descriptions and discussions of specific carbonate facies patterns in North America, Europe and the Middle East. The whole range of carbonate facies including shelf cycles, shelf margin buildups (reefs) and basinal facies is covered. The text will be useful in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses and of high interest to exploration and exploitation geologists in the petroleum and mineral industries.
