Peter Fraser was New Zealand's Prime Minister from March 1940 until December 1949. This meant that a huge proportion of his time and energy was necessarily directed towards New Zealand's war effort. However, he also managed to make notable contributions in such diverse domestic fields as education, cultural affairs, economic policy and race relations. In foreign affairs, he played a not inconsiderable role in shaping peace and launching the United Nations. Contributors to this book include some who knew and worked with Peter Fraser and professional historians. Their combined memories and opinions, and the analyses which become possible only as events are able to be seen in perspective, provide convincing evidence that Peter Fraser was an extraordinary Prime Minister - one for too long ignored and one too little written on. It is hoped that this book goes some way towards redressing the lack, and towards establishing Peter Fraser in New Zealand's historical firmament as one of the country's truly great Prime Ministers.
