Professor Stephen Hawking is one of the most respected scientists on the planet - certainly the best known, not least through his best-selling books and the award-winning film The Theory of Everything. But throughout the world of science, it is the inspiration of his astonishing life, his battle with motor neurone disease, that leaves us as much in awe of this man's unlimited human spirit as of his towering achievements in physics. 2016 was a very special year.
