While waiting for my turn in the clinic, I overheard Dr. U Myint Swe asking a Sayadawgyi about the "After-life." The Sayadawgyi enthusiastically explained using higher Buddhist philosophy and metaphysics, but Dr. U Myint Swe seemed unsatisfied with the Pāli terminology. When I entered for treatment, he posed the same question to me. Anticipating that I couldn't satisfy someone who was not content with a Mahāthera's explanation, I suggested consulting the theras. However, a few days later, he brought up the topic again. I recommended he present his questions to Mahāsi Mahāthera, and he agreed. When I relayed Mahāthera's response—that it is the devotees' duty to ask and the theras' responsibility to clarify—Dr. U Myint Swe submitted three written questions. Mahāthera's reply, aligned with the teachings of the Buddha, was vivid and clear, guiding him like a light in the dark or a pot turned upright. This exchange of ideas and insights ultimately led to the creation of this book, which addresses the complexities of life and the questions that arise within it.
