Na kraji městečka žije stařec, o němž se vypráví, že rozmlouvá s anděly a dokáže dělat zázraky. Jakov se za ním vypraví a poprosí ho o pomoc. Ani starcova modlitba však nedokáže otevřít nebeskou bránu, a tak si stařec pozve domů sedm nejprohnilejších lotrů, které přiměje k tomu, aby se s ním pomodlili za Michailovo uzdravení. Důležitou roli hrají v knize ilustrace výtvarníka Gennadyho Spirina.
