Sanditon je jej posledné dielo a román Watsonovci sa ako jediný zachoval v rukopise...

Hneď na začiatku rozprávania sa pokojné anglické mestečko Meryton stane dejiskom čudnej nákazy, po ktorej sa mŕtvi vracajú medzi živých. Temperamentná hrdinka Elizabeth Bennetová je odhodlaná bojovať a zvíťaziť nad tým zombiovským ohrozením, ale príchod pyšného a arogantného pána Darcyho odvráti jej pozornosť iným smerom. Od toho sa odvíja pôvabná komédia spoločenských manierov s množstvom kultivovaných slovných súbojov medzi dvoma mladými zaľúbencami, a ešte väčším množstvom surových súbojov na bojisku plnom krvi. Dokáže Elizabeth zlikvidovať satanove hniezdo? Dokáže potlačiť spoločenské predsudky šľachty, ktorá si potrpí na svoju triednu nadradenosť? V románe Pýcha a predsudok a zombiovia nájdete romantickú lásku, zranené srdcia, zápasenia s mečom, kanibalizmus a množstvo rozkladajúcich sa mŕtvol.

Anglie na počátku 19. století vypadá jako krásný rozlehlý park s rodinnými sídly, v nichžžijí šťastní a laskaví lidé. Ale všechno není tak idylické, jak se zprvu jeví. Příběhy láskya společenských konvencí. Příběhy z lepší společnosti, ve které city a vztahy ovlivňujevýše majetku. Příběhy krásných, vzdělaných a silných žen, které bojují za právo na pravoulásku. Hlavními hrdinkami jsou sestry Marianne a Elinor Dashwoodovy, které mají ještě mladší sestru Margaret a staršího nevlastního bratra Johna. Na začátku románu pan Dashwood umírá a paní Dashwoodová se i s dcerami musí odstěhovat z rodinného sídla, které připadlo nejstaršímu synovi. S omezenými prostředky se paní Dashwoodová a její dcery usadí v malém venkovském domku, kde Marianne a Elinor prožívají své první lásky i zklamání. Marianne se řídí především svými city a své starší sestře Elinor, která má racionálnější pohled na svět, vyčítá chlad a rezervovanost. Ale nakonec zjistí, že rozum a cit se nemusí nutně vylučovat…

Třináct dopisů, které získalo Muzeum Jane Austenové, nám dává nahlédnout do soukromého i pracovního života této slavné a oblíbené anglické spisovatelky v letech 1801 až 1817. Dozvíme se něco z prostředí lázeňského města Bath, kde s rodinou pobývala až do roku 1805, kdy zemřel její otec. Její pozdější dopisy už jsou psány převážně z Chawtonu, kde s matkou, sestrou Cassandrou a Marthou Lloydovou žila téměř do své předčasné smrti. Najdeme v nich zajímavé i barvité postřehy z venkovského života, ale i mnohé poznámky týkající se vzniku a přijetí jejích děl, hlavně Pýchy a předsudku, Mansfieldského panství a Emmy. S těmito romány jsou spjaty i její pobyty v Londýně, kde dohlížela na jejich tisk a vydání. Vůbec nejdojemnější dopis, sepsaný pouhých pár dní po spisovatelčině smrti roku 1817, však pochází z pera její milované sestry Cassandry. Každý dopis je opatřen úvodem a poznámkami, které vysvětlují, co by dnešnímu čtenáři mohlo případně unikat.

Druhé pokračování třídílného románu přináší další osudy čtyř dcer pana Watsona – laskavé Elizabeth, krásné Emmy, marnivé Margaret a svéhlavé Penelopy. Po smrti reverenda Watsona se dívky stěhují k bratrovi Robertovi a jeho nelaskavé ženě Jane do Croydonu. Penelopa a Margaret usilují o manželství, zatímco Elizabeth nachází štěstí s ovdovělým Georgem Millarem. Emma, vzpomínající na pana Howarda, se snaží uniknout z domu, který se pro ni stává vězením. Její švagrová Jane si je vědoma její hodnoty jako guvernantky a brání jí v odchodu. Navzdory tomu se kolem Emmy objevují muži, kteří jí skládají hold. Na scénu přichází sir William Gordon, který miluje slečnu Osbornovou, směšný Alfred Freemantle a prohnaný doktor Morgan, jenž vymyslí lest, jak Emmě ublížit. Postavy z prvního dílu, včetně lord Osborneho a jeho rodiny, sledují dění z povzdálí, což zvyšuje očekávání na závěrečnou část. Emma se také setká se svým dosud neznámým bratrem Samem, jehož přítomnost jí přináší radost a vynahrazuje chlad Roberta, pod jehož ochranou se dívky nacházejí. I Robert však ukazuje náznaky citu.

V dobách, kdy ženy bývaly křehké květinky a mladé dívky často interesantně omdlévaly, vytvořila Jane Austenová ve své Emmě hrdinku z jiného kadlubu. Když v útlém mládí ztratí matku a na otce, slabošského hypochondra, nelze spoléhat, ujme se správy věcí na rodném panství sama a nároky, které na ni nelehká situace klade, vypěstují v bystré dívce vlastnosti suverénního generála. Jen ona všemu rozumí, jen ona ví, co je pro každého dobré. Tímto způsobem ovšem kráčí od maléru k maléru a často pěkně zavaří i těm, kterým upřímně chtěla pomoci. Ale protože jí nechybí dobré srdce, časem zmoudří a pochopí, kde hledat v životě ty pravé hodnoty. Román (v jeho filmovém zpracování ztvárnila Emmu oblíbená Gwyneth Paltrowová) zažívá v poslední době novou vlnu čtenářského zájmu. Je to snad tím, že dnešní ženy v jeho hrdince rozpoznávají předchůdkyně svého emancipačního úsilí o společenské uznání svých schopností i úskalí, jimž by se přitom měly vyhnout? Anebo je to prostě tak, že ctnosti a noblesa doby minulé nám i dnes v podání tak dobré autorky, jako je Jane Austenová, mají co říct?

„První moderní anglická autorka“, „mladší sestra Shakespearova“ to jsou jen dva z mnoha lichotivých atributů, jimiž obdivovatelé vzdávají hold autorce, která už víc jak dvě století poutá neutuchající lásku vděčných čtenářů. Austenová žila v době, kdy v literatuře vládl romantismus, bouřlivé city, temné tragično, přemíra sentimentu, jí však bylo dáno hravé, ironicky laděné, komické vidění okolního světa, smysl pro mravní hodnoty, schopnost vidět lidem až na dno duše, a k tomu suverénní vypravěčský talent. „Píšu o lásce a penězích, o čem jiném lze taky vůbec psát?“ podotkla kdysi. A láska ve svých proměnlivých podobách, věrná i zrazující, ztracená i znovunalezená, sebestředná i obětavá, provází jemnou Annu, popelku v rodině pošetilého, ješitného baroneta, a nejedné zkoušce je její citlivá duše vystavena, než ona i všichni kolem ní dohrají svou lidskou komedii. Román, který jsme nazvali Pýcha a přemlouvání, vyšel posmrtně v roce 1818 pod názvem Persuasion.

Věnováno památce mé tety Jane Austenové. Pan Watson je ovdovělý vikář s početným potomstvem - dvěma syny a čtyřmi dcerami. Nejmladší z nich, Emma, byla vychována v rodině své bohaté tety, a je tudíž vzdělanější a jemnější než její sestry Elisabeth, Margaret a Penelope. Když však ovdoví i zmíněná teta a uzavře nerovný sňatek z lásky, je Emma nucena vrátit se do otcovského domu. Setkává se tam nejen s hypochondrickým a milujícím otcem, ale i s bezuzdným hledáním manžela, jímž své okolí obtěžují Margaret a Penelope. Tíhne tedy k nejstarší sestře Elisabeth, nepříliš inteligentní, avšak upřímné a oddané zbytku rodiny. V sousedství Watsonových žije šlechtická rodina Osbornových. Emma si získá nevítanou pozornost mladého lorda Osborna, zatímco Margaret doslova pronásleduje jeho bezohledného nohsleda Toma Musgravea. Ten se ovšem předvádí spíše před její švagrovou, urozenou a snobskou Jane, která přijela k Watsonovým na návštěvu, doprovázena manželem, hrubým Emminým bratrem Robertem. Blízké okolí však není prosto ani jiných mužů, a tak můžeme sledovat austenovské zahájení velké hry, při níž autorka i její následovnice pohybují figurkami na šachovnici děje s ironií i humorem. Románovou sérii Mladší sestra rozepsala pod názvem The Watsons Jane Austenová. Toto dílo dokončila její neteř Catherine Austenová Hubbacková, spisovatelka a strážkyně odkazu své velké tety.

Ve třetím a závěrečném díle se Emma vydává na cestu za štěstím, které se neustále vzdalují, i když je na dosah. Croydonský lékař pan Morgan, obletovaný pacientkami, si neuvědomuje, že Emma je výjimečná nejen krásou, ale i svým rozhledem a osobností. Na scénu přichází pastor Bridge se svou sestrou, kteří Emmě pomáhají uniknout z Morganových osidel a nelaskavého domova, kde vládne despotická švagrová Jane a její manžel Robert, advokát s chladným srdcem. Novomanželé Rosa a William Gordonovi také přinášejí vítané pozvání. Kontrasty se prohlubují – mezi šedí městských ulic a jarní přírodou v Burtonu, kde Emma nachází útočiště, nebo mezi cílevědomostí její sestry Margaret a Emminým idealismem. Tyto rozdíly naznačují blížící se finále, v němž se odhalují pravé tváře jednotlivých postav. Lord Osborne se mění z egoistického mladíka v citlivého ochránce, zatímco jeho sestra a její manžel zapomínají na společenské předsudky. Doktor Morgan, posedlý představou, že Emma miluje, zaplatí za svou obsesí vysokou cenu. Jen Emma a pan Howard zůstávají věrní svým opravdovým citům. První a druhá část románu ukazují, že dílo velké spisovatelky, dokončené její talentovanou neteří, zůstává živé a nyní vychází v prvním českém překladu.
