Hrdinom diela je znudený päťdesiat päťročný milionár Eugene Henderson, ktorý má už po krk svojich dvoch manželstiev a piatich detí. Literárny vedec profesor Moses Herzog je na pokraji úplného nervového zrútenia. Konflikty medzi ním a spoločnosťou, jeho najbližším okolím a v ňom samom sa vyhrocujú a on cíti, že musí definitívne uzavrieť istú epochu života. Ústredným psychickým problémom Herzoga je stroskotané manželstvo, ale spolu s ním akoby skrachoval celý svet: Bellow prostredníctvom svojho protagonistu zúfalo bojuje o záchranu svojprávnosti individuálneho ja pred bezduchou uniformitou, ktorá naň dolieha zo všetkých strán, skúma otázky slobody konania a osobnej zodpovednosti človeka a predovšetkým neriešiteľnú dilemu intelektuála, ktorého existencia závisí od fungovania komplikovaného mechanizmu mnohonásobných zviazaností a konvencií, čo udržujú pri živote modernú spoločnosť, a ktorého práve táto mnohonásobná zviazanosť ubíja. Je takmer príznakom alebo chorobou našich čias, že človek zlyháva vo svojich najsúkromnejších vzťahoch a najzúrivejšia búrka lomcuje jeho mikrokozmom práve tam, kde by podľa zákonov prírody mal nachádzať stabilitu a ochranu.
