Set against the backdrop of 1869, a young missionary couple, Heinrich and Aganetha Dirks, embark on a journey aboard the ship Electra to establish a mission station on the island of Sumatra. Their mission is to spread Christianity in southern Batak territory, where Islam is gaining ground and the local population still practices ancestral worship. With the Batak regarded as one of the last cannibalistic tribes, the couple faces the daunting challenge of converting a community with no prior Christian presence.
