V románe sa autor zamýšľa nad osudom Európy v priebehu dvoch svetových vojen, nad vojnou vo Vietname i na Falklandských ostrovoch na osudoch príslušníkov troch generácií anglicko-gréckej rodiny Beechovcov. Jej členovia sa postupne vyznávajú zo svojich intímnych vzájomných vzťahov vo forme monológov zväčša v retrospektívnom podaní. Mladá žena Sophie prežíva manželskú krízu na návštevách u svojho newyorského psychoanalytika, profesionálny fotograf Harry, traumatizovaný stratou matky pri svojom narodení, neustále bojuje s vlastným pocitom odcudzenia voči svetu, Harryho otec, majiteľ muničnej továrne, zápasí s citmi voči synovi, ktorému nevie odpustiť smrť jeho matky. V jednotlivých kapitolách pomenovaných podľa rozprávačov sa postupne odhaľujú tajomstvá členov rodiny, ich straty, pocity viny, zrady, ktoré nastoľujú otázku zodpovednosti každého jednotlivca pred históriou.

Román The Light of Day je kombináciou veľmi pôsobivej „love story“ a rozprávania vyznačujúceho sa vysokým napätím, ktorej výsledkom je jedinečné a krehké literárne dielo o tom, aké popudy a aké sily vrhajú človeka do extrémnych polôh lásky a nenávisti. Hlavnou postavou románu je George Webb, bývalý policajt, ktorého – podľa jeho vlastných slov – nespravodlivo prepustili pre údajnú korupciu. V tretej rovine je to fascinujúca a bohatá história Fens, ako sa odráža na osudoch dvoch rodín, sedliackej a podnikateľskej, a na životných príbehoch typických postáv, dopĺňajúci miestny kolorit. Realistický obraz života zaostalého kraja, izolovaného od ostatného sveta, je spestrený iróniou a miestami priam šibeničným humorom.
