Zlý londýnsky čarodejník Andrew úskokom pošle svojho synovca na prieskum do iného sveta, kam sa on sám neodváži. Synovec Digory spolu s priateľkou Polly v ňom objavia miesto, odkiaľ sa dá vchádzať do bezpočtu iných svetov. Hneď prvý, ktorý navštívia, však nevyzerá prívetivo. Je celý mŕtvy a všetko sa v ňom rozpadá. Napoly nechtiac v ňom oživia kráľovnú Jádis, ktorá pred vekmi zabila všetko živé vo svojej krajine špeciálnou kliatbou a chce sa dostať niekam inam. Šťastnou náhodou má rovnaké úmysly aj tarkánov kôň s nevysloviteľným erdžaním namiesto mena, ktorého chlapec nazve Brejo. Spolu vyrazia na sever do Narnie a Arkierova. Cestou sa vďaka úteku pred skupinou rozzúrených levov stretnú s tarkánskou dievčinou Aravis, ktorá uteká do Narnie preto, lebo ju chce otec nasilu vydať za starého a mimoriadne nechutného vezíra. Oba kone, na ktorých sa deti vezú, sú hovoriace kone z Narnie, ktoré v mladosti uniesli Kalormenčania do otroctva. Podarí sa im dostať do vytúženej krajiny?
