Through a series of detailed composite portraits, an international collection of contributors have created in this volume a clear vision of the Byzantines and their social world.

The handbook illustrates 94 Greek literary papyrus texts from Egypt and Herculaneum and documents the different types of scripts used in copying works of Greek literature, from the earliest surviving bookrolls written in the 4th century BC up to the first century AD. The aim is twofold: (1) to establish their relative (and, wherever possible, absolute) chronological sequence, and (2) to distinguish and characterize their stylistic features. Specimens of different types of scripts (“hands”) that appear stylistically related have been grouped together. In their joint introduction, the authors summarize the main results of their investigation and attempt to identify the social and cultural factors that have determined the development of different types of Greek literary scripts during the Hellenistic and Augustan era. The book also contains a comprehensive bibliography and indices. Hellenistic Bookhands is a tool for scholars and students of Classics, Greek papyrology, palaeography, and the transmission of Classical Greek literature.

Reliquienauthentiken zählen zu den kleinen, unscheinbaren, aber ungemein aussagekräftigen Schriftzeugnissen des Frühmittelalters. Die Beschriftung von Reliquien führt bis in die älteste Schriftlichkeit der Konvente und illustriert die Austauschphänomene des Heiligen` seit der Spätantike. Der Band versammelt die Beiträge der ersten internationalen Fachtagung zu den Reliquienauthentiken, die 2017 in Mainz stattfand. Authentiken sind die an den Reliquien zu ihrer Identifikation angebrachten kleinen Zertifikate. Diese Etiketten haben sich oft auch dann erhalten, wenn die sonstige Überlieferung der Kirchen und Klöster verloren gegangen ist. Sie sind deswegen trotz ihrer Knappheit einzigartige Zeugnisse von Schrift, Sprache und Heiligenverehrung in früher Zeit und für die Kulturgeschichte eine Quelle ersten Ranges. Manuscripts from the Byzantine era preserve lists of notable Greek authors across various literary and scientific genres, yet there has been limited research into their nature, chronology, origin, formation, and use. The volume Παραδείγματα offers a new critical edition of these lists, serving as a foundation for further discussion. One list, previously considered a single entity, is revealed to consist of two originally independent and diachronic lists: an older one linked to Alexandrian philology and another from the 5th-6th century AD, with additions extending to the 9th century, formed between Alexandria and Constantinople. A later list from the 13th-14th centuries differs significantly, reflecting all-Byzantine elements, partly rooted in Byzantine orthodoxy with the inclusion of Church Fathers and theologians, and influenced by cultural shifts of the 11th-12th centuries and the Second Sophistic. Each list's groups and authors are examined within their geo-historical context, considering their activity, production, textual tradition, and significance in Serorian scholarship. Additionally, the lists are compared with canons reformulated by Byzantine scholars. This volume is valuable for those interested in ancient literary and scientific-philosophical canons, the history of scholarship, and the role of classical and Church Fathers' texts in Byzantium.
