Werther, mladý vzdelaný človek s dušou básnika, prichádza na vidiek a tam stretáva Lottu. Napriek tomu, že je Lotta zasnúbená, nachádza v nej spriaznenú dušu. Werther sa čoraz viac prepadá do lásky, ktorá nie je uskutočniteľná, do prudkej a neprekonateľnej vášne. Listy, ktoré píše, sú sugestívnou výpoveďou o jeho citovom živote a majú potenciál hlboko rezonovať aj vo vedomí dnešného človeka, viac ako dve storočia od prvého vydania.
