Jeden z najúspešnejších románov kultového autora sci-fi. Tentoraz sa dej odohráva v Kalifornii blízkej budúcnosti, kde narkomanov zabíja nová, úplne návyková droga. Antihrdina Bob Arctor, inak tiež protidrogový agent Fred, otvára svoj dom narkomanom a prežíva s nimi všetko, čo so sebou táto látka prináša. Drogová scéna sa ale radikálne zmenila a drogy, polícia, svet, ba ani smrť už nie sú ako kedysi. Ovplyvňovanie vnútornej aj vonkajšej skutočnosti drogou je Dickovou večnou témou, ale nikdy nevychádzal toľko z vlastnej skúsenosti, ako v tejto knihe. Na rozdiel od svojich ostatných diel, tu autor vďaka zakotveniu v skutočnosti často využíva čierny humor a absurdnú grotesku, čo z románu robí najzábavnejšie vážnu knihu o drogách.
