Kun en afkræftet og udhungret pige ved navn Evanlyn kan fortælle dem hvorfor: Morgarath har sendt sine grumme skabninger ud for at indfange alle keltere. Mens Gilan haster tilbage for at overbringe kongen disse ubehagelige nyheder, opdager Will, Horace, og Evanlyn den virkelige og skæbnesvangre grund til Morgaraths overfald på kelterne. Nu er det op til de tre unge at handle hurtigt, hvis katastrofen skal forhindres.

In het tweede deel zijn Hal en de bemanning van de 'Reiger' de piraat Zavac op het spoor, die de kostbaarste schat van de Skandiërs heeft gestolen: de Andomal. Door een flinke storm op zee is Hal gedwongen om een schuilplaats te zoeken voor de winter. Terwijl ze wachten, hebben Hal en zijn jongens alle tijd om hun vechttechniek te verbeteren en een plan te bedenken voor als ze de piraten gevonden hebben. Want dan gaat het echte werk pas beginnen... Zal het ze lukken om de machtige Zavac en zijn bende te verslaan?

In de novelle 'De jacht op het schaduwdier' is Maddie hard op weg een behendige Grijze Jager te worden. Als Will een paar weken van huis moet, laat hij Maddie achter om een oogje in het zeil te houden. Dan klopt een boerenechtpaar aan voor hulp. Maddie op jacht De boer en boerin klagen over een mysterieus beest dat 's nachts op hun erf rondzwerft. Maddie is dan misschien nog geen Grijze Jager, ze wil wel graag helpen. Hoewel het stel geen enkel vertrouwen heeft in Maddie, gaat ze op onderzoek uit en bedenkt ze een plan. Dat plan is alleen niet bepaald ongevaarlijk...
