Jeho rozsiahle cestovanie po Latinskej Amerike a následné publikácie priniesli vedecký pohľad na tento región a po prvýkrát navrhli, že kontinenty boli kedysi spojené. Vo svojom monumentálnom diele Kosmos sa pokúsil zjednotiť rôzne oblasti vedeckého poznania, čím zanechal nezmazateľný odkaz v chápaní prírodného sveta a jeho prepojenosti.

Popsal zde 3500 nových rostlin, rituály domorodců i jejich každodenní život, rozvrácený koloniální nadvládou a alkoholem. Texty o Amazonkách, El Doradu, jedu curare, šňupání halucinogenu yopo či lovu želvy nás přenesou o dvě století zpět a můžeme spolu s autorem žasnout nad objevy, které v tomto neznámém světě učinil.
